In 1962 the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture organised the first edition of the International Leadership Workshops for Rural Youth under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Since its inception, more than 2000 young rural leaders and experts from 154 countries (100 participants from 56 countries in 2017) have met every second year in Herrsching, Bavaria, to share their experience as young rural leaders and learn from each other. During the two-week activity, participants take part in a training course on leadership run in their own language before gathering with other participants to exchange on the challenges they face in their rural communities, share coping strategies and develop innovative ideas for the future.
